How to Prepare for Your Studio Newborn Session

Hey Momma! Oh, I’m so excited for you and your family to have a new little baby. There is nothing like those first moments of snuggles and kisses - it goes by too quickly. I know you’re trying to soak up every moment.

Scheduling your studio newborn session is such a great way to be able to not only enjoy these moments, but to be able to remember just the way these moments made you feel. Each time you look back at your photos, you’ll be brought back to holding your tiny little baby.

one: Booking and Scheduling

Yay! You’ve done the most important step! You’ve received the Newborn Brochure, selected a Studio Newborn Session, signed your contract and paid your initial payment. You’re officially booked! Next, we’ll choose a date to plan on! Newborn Photos should be done within the first 3-4 weeks of baby’s new life. I like to schedule your session 2 weeks after your due date so that way if you give birth a little early, or a little late, we should still be in the perfect range! But of course timing is flexible, because I know every birth is different, and some adjustments may be needed!

TWO: Consultation and ‘Getting to Know You’ ForM

Call or text me anytime, and let me know what you’re hoping for and what’s most important to you! This is often done before booking to help make sure you book the session just right for you! I LOVE getting to know you and your family, what makes you, YOU! I love learning about the quirks and special things. Fill out your ‘Getting to Know You’ form with all the details. The more you share, the more intimate and tailored just for you your session will be.

THREE: Family Styling

Once you click “done” on your form, you’ll be sent straight to a styling guide to help you start thinking through your outfits!! It has lots of good inspiration photos to help you see what looks like YOU. On the Style Guide you’ll see lots of dresses  for you to borrow for your session! Choose a few that you like best and we’ll find outfits for dad and big kids that’ll work together - I’ll help you pull colors and pieces that will all go together! After baby comes, you can come try them on before your session or day of! We’ll find lots of options for you and tie everything together to create a look you’ll love!

FOUR: Set Expectations

Okay this is a big one! It’s not unusual for dads (and older kids) to not be excited about photos. It’s probably out of their comfort zone, and they don’t know what to expect. So spend a minute going through my instagram to show them what a session might kind of look like. It’ll help the experience not feel so foreign. (Remember you’ve looked at 100s of baby photos in searching for a photographer, they have probably looked at… zero?) Tell them what you’re hoping to get out of your session. Tell them what you’re nervous about and ask for help. If you have older kids, just tell them we’re going to go play at your friend’s house while she takes pictures of the baby. Simple is good! It’s going to be so special to capture these moments as a new family.

FIVE: Pack Your Bag

Yay! One of your first family outings! Let me be the first to say - I know it can be hard to leave the house during this season, but you’ve got this mommy. Don’t be afraid to ask dad for help. Pack your diaper bag just as you would if you were going to the doctor or grandma’s house. No need to over pack. A binky, bottle, extra onesie, diapers and wipes should cover you! I have everything else you may need!

SIX: Enjoy Your Session

And that’s it!! Your session day is here, you have everything ready, and I am ready, and so excited, for you! We are going to have a great time together, I just can’t wait. If you want to learn more about what to expect during your studio newborn session, read this blog post!

Congratulations again Mommy! Anytime you need anything, I am just a phone call, text or DM away. Please reach out anytime! You can’t bother me. I just love you and am so excited for this season of your life!

XOXO,

Laurel
