Outdoor Family Photos - Camera Settings for Beginners!

Hey fellow family photographers! Today, let's chat about the camera basics that can turn your golden-hour outdoor sessions into magic. Buckle up; we're about to uncover the secrets behind creating crisp, clear images that capture the essence of joy and playfulness in those ever-moving families. We’ll cover all the settings i change for each session - f-stop, shutter speed, ISO, and White Balance.

F-Stop Magic: Finding Your Sweet Spot! 📸 Now, let's start with that magical f-stop! Shooting at a low f-stop creates that dreamy bokeh effect we all adore. I used to swear by a consistent 1.4f on my trusty 35mm lens, but feel free to play around. If you're working with a larger family and want everyone in clear focus, consider nudging it up to 2.2. But for a small group shot of 2-3 people, embrace the beauty of a low 1.4 for some stunning bokehlicious goodness!

Shutter Speed: The Need for Speed! 🚀 The next setting you’ll adjust is your shutter speed. In the world of lively family sessions, having a shutter speed faster than 1/250 is your ticket to success. But usually during a sunny golden hour session i start at 1/1000 or less! Adjusting for the low f-stop. This ensures your camera can freeze those delightful moments in focus, even when the little ones are on the move. Pro tip: set your shutter release on high, not single, for a smoother flow of shots that keeps up with the action.

ISO: Adjusting to the Light! ☀️ As the sun gracefully makes its exit, and you hit blue hour (my favorite beach lighting right DURING the actually dipping of the sun when all the light is EVEN and beautiful - but yes a little dark) be ready to make friends with your ISO adjustments. Aim to keep it as low as possible, but don't shy away from bumping it up as the light fades. Today's cameras and post-editing tools can handle noise well, even at ISO 2000. And hey, a touch of noise can add character to your shots – it's all about embracing your personal style!

White Balance Wisdom: Setting the Mood! 🎨 Let's demystify white balance! If you're mostly shooting in consistent lighting, consider setting it and forgetting it with a reliable Kelvin setting. However, if your photography adventures take you from the beach to indoor settings like mine, keep two trusty Kelvin settings in your toolkit. Aim for a warm outdoor glow at around 6000 and a cozy 5000 indoors both with a subtle pink adjustment.

There you have it – a quick dive into camera basics for those enchanting family sessions at sunset! Keep these tips close, experiment fearlessly, and discover your own signature style. The magic unfolds when you take control, capturing candid moments that make family photography an absolute joy.
